The walkway is a little narrow on our side."

I found this note to be petty and hilarious because
1) my bike is chained to my staircase and and not hers (does not affect her going up to her apartment) and
2) in MY walkway not the neighbors

I wrote a note back saying that I would not move my bike since it is not convenient for me to carry it up stairs every day and I mentioned out the 2 points I made above.

Well, Saturday morning, Miss Neighbor rings the doorbell while I'm still sleeping. My lovely fiance answered the door and she starts whining about the fact that her bag bumped into my bike.

Oh, really? On a city street with bikes attached everywhere, she's going to complain because she couldn't walk in her walkway because HER bike was on her fence so she had to walk close to mine and bumped into my bike?

When the fiance pointed out that she could move her bike, she asked him to send me over later so we could "settle" things. I'm not sure what there is to discuss so I have no intention of going over. I responded to her note civilly. What does she think she'll do? Bully me? The lady has got to be kidding. Instead of moving her bike in her walkway, she wants me to move mine?

As they say, "Give me a break!"

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://americanincanada.blogspot.com/2008/08/cest-la-guerre-bike-war.html' title='C'est la guerre! The street is tree-lined and the apartment below is El Caso de los Gatos.

Lost your shoes? I'll be glad to leave your district. I was attracted by the "suburb" feel and Monkland Village is not so bad. However, I never felt so much fear and racism before living among your people.

To all those ladies who give me dirty looks, like the one this evening who looked at me like I didn't deserve to be on the same sidewalk, good riddance! You won't see me again come June 1st. No more need to clutch your purse and move as far away as possible. There will be one less black female walking or running on the sidewalk.

To all you mothers who frantically yelled at their kids playing on the front lawn and clutched them as if I was going to eat them, you can sleep easy now. One less black person your children will have to see. It doesn't matter that I am well dressed and probably make more money than you ever will. I'm black and you see me as a threat to your lil-white little babes.

You made me understand why some black people in the US are so angry. For the first time in my life I understand the aggressiveness. You know why? Because I feel helpless. When you look at me with deathly fear written all over your face, I feel helpless. When you cross the street, when you are afraid to get out of your car until I walk far away, when you block the sidewalk or shove me: What can I do? I'm damned if I do nothing and damned if I do something. Do you know how infuriating that is?

I will leave you people alone and go live in the densely, diversely populated Plateau neighborhood. I live in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace (NDG) neighborhood and last summer a cupcake store called Cho'Cola opened up. Too bad it was terrible! I went at least three times over last summer and fall thinking I'd chance upon a good cupcake or piece of cake. I tried their lemon, carrot cake, and vanilla offerings. The cakes are very dry. The icing is extremely sweet and lacking in smoothness. Basically, cake-in-a-box tastes better. The verdict: stay away!

A few weekends ago, I came across another cupcake store in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood. This store is called Petits Gateaux. I had a yummy violet-tea cupcake, a lemon cupcake with a shortbread crust at the bottom, and a carrot-cake cupcake. The lemon cupcake filling was a bit too sweet and custardy for my taste - I'm not a fan of the custard texture. Others may appreciate this cupcake. The shortbread crust was excellent. The carrot cake cupcake certainly doesn't beat MY carrot cake (haha) but was very good, albeit a bit greasy. The verdict: ok

Then last week, when taking a walk in Old Montreal with a friend, we came upon yet another cupcake store called Les Glaceurs. I took the following cupcakes: red velvet, vanilla, and lemon. The only edible one was the red velvet cupcake. It was very good. I could not finish the vanilla cupcake - waaaay too sweet for me. Why mess with us? We know it's going to snow in two weeks! And we're ready!

I like winter, well, the first 3 months at least, because it feels final. Fall is a transition. It's beautiful but makes me a little uneasy. It's a time of vulnerability. It reminds me of my loneliness. The leaves have changed and are falling. With them go all the things I should have or could have done. Winter is whispering ever louder each day. When winter comes, it's winter. Final. Cold . No ifs, ands, or buts. Whether it is humid cold (in your bones) or dry cold (just cold), its cold. There is something pleasant about that finality. No wondering. No questions. And there is the hope of spring to come.

Another Fall

Fall is here again. First snow happened last Friday (wet snow mixed with cold rain) and snow is expected for tomorrow. I have to say, I enjoy about 2 weeks of fall - the first two weeks when its cool and the leaves are changing colors and falling. But the wet, cold weather that follows? No, thank you! Take me straight to cold & snowy, please. At least I can do something then, like ski!

Last week I was in the "good ole USA" as my mom says(to be more specific, New York City) for a business trip and it was great. I got to see some old friends and even had a slumber party at my hotel. Coming back to Montreal was a little sad. But, the pouting only lasted a day. Life is about change and experiencing new things. Plus, I really can't complain about my life.

No news here in Montreal...I have an upcoming trip planned to...guess where? I can't wait! There were some rough trips where the slopes were icy and just not that fun but if I went to a mountain, I went up and would ski down. No point wasting a trip!

I stayed mainly on the nice green/circle slopes. Mont Tremblant has various ranges of this from "Easiest" to "Easy" to "A little difficult." Once, following Shanti (who snowboards) down a green slope, we took a turn onto a blue slope. At first it was not so bad. Then I started feeling my muscles tire. It was much harder than I expected. Then I noticed in front of me that people kept stopping and then starting again. I slowed down and came to a stop. And what loomed before me was a hill steeper than anything I ever tried. I nearly had a panic attack. My first reaction was to look around to see if there were any side slopes I could sidestep to. Nope. Then I looked behind me to see if I could somehow climb out of that mess. Nope. I had to get down the slope. I probably stood there for 5 minutes. What finally motivated me was seeing a little kid struggle, fall a few times, but make it down. So I started at one end and tried to zig zag across but had some trouble because the slope was steeper than I was used to and I really did not have any excellent technique mastered for that. I tumbled a few times but each fall actually gave me more confidence because it was the worst that could happen.

I made it down and a cheering Shanti awaited me. A few epithets may have escaped my lips (what's a little French among French Canadians?) but I was quite proud of myself.

The slope is pictured above and does not look bad from below and may not even look too bad from above for an experienced skier. But the view from above for a beginner is a tad intimidating. That slope inspired me to start take harder slopes overall and it made me a better skier.

Sous la pluie

It's been raining and cool for a week now. Rain, rain, and more rain. All this rain actually makes me wish for winter. This past winter is probably the first I really enjoyed. Why? Because I learned to ski!

No, it is not that hard. Once you learn how to stop you're pretty much on your way. I skied every weekend and sometimes during the week for 2 months (Jan-Feb) and afterwards whenever I had the chance. The first time I went, I remember looking at the kiddie/learning slope and thinking "wow, how will I make it down?". I saw the other slopes and thought "No way will I ever make it there." My bravado turned into "Hey S, let's just take it easy today!"

My first attempts to make it down ended in me falling down several times but upon observing an instructor nearby with a student, I started imitating what he was teaching her and all of a sudden I realized I made it all the way down! Then I did it again. And again! I was ready for the big slopes! NOT!

I tackled taking the lift and getting off and then looked down and saw the easy slope we had chosed. Oh no......Folks, there is no better inspiration to doing something than putting yourself in a situation where you have no choice. I had to ski down. And I did. Slowly but surely. Then I did it again. And again. I was hooked!!! The rush of zipping down in nice powdery snow was exhilirating. Falling was not really painful. The only painful part of the experience was my cold hands but I fixed that problem on later trips by buying hand warmers for my gloves.

Runnin...

What a busy weekend I had. Finally moved into my new place. But not before running a 5K on Mont Royal in Montreal. It was rainy and cold but I didn't let the weather stop me! Luckily, the rain tapered off until right when I finished. Running and moving in one day. I don't remember the last time I felt so tired at the end of the day (an early Saturday - was in bed at 10pm!).

I think I will start nominations for random things about Montreal.

Best View: the view from the veranda of the Grand Chalet on Mont-Royal.

Smelliest subway: Mont-Royal. No where else have I been where I have experienced such an olfactory attack! At least 5 different types of smelly odors wafted around as I exited there recently. Seriously, why does everyone want to live in the Plateau.

Smelliest corner: the corner of Marie-Anne and St. Laurent. Is it just me or is allergy season worse this year? Oh wait, maybe it's not worse. It's probably the fact that for the first time since I was in middle school, I am deciding to go this season without drugs. *gasp*. Yup, that means I did not start taking the drugs of choice in March in anticipation of spring. It means I tapered off the drugs last fall and have not looked back.

Call me crazy, but I decided that I can't handle adding yet another drug every year to the expanding list of drugs I took. And I hated the fact that I felt addicted to most of them. I also hated the fact that the drug that worked the best for me (in weak moments I think badly to the days I was doped on this) also caused me to break out in hives and go crazy if I missed a pill. A few years ago it was so bad I got into the habit of overdosing, because I was so worried about having taken a pill. I would only notice when I finished my prescription sooner that I had been taking too many! The drugs of choice were all legal but shall not be named, lest I endorse any of them.

Anyway, I have the *pleasure* now of waking up with crusty (tmi, I know) swollen eyes and sneezing and sniffling every 2 seconds. Someone hook me up with Flonase! oops...I just suffered a momentary lapse....

So what am I doing this year? Exercise as usual. Vitamin C as usual. A dash of meditation. A ton of water. And a huge amount of determination.

Can I make it???

(the cat is Leo - my old roomate's cat. No one to meet for a tea or coffee at a cafe. No one to talk to while sitting on a park bench in the sun. My only "friend" in this city is my bf and we're having issues.

The hardest part of moving to Montreal for me was not having any friends close by. I have put myself "out there." I took dance classes at 2 different places twice a week, I go to company events, I tried doing things with my colleagues and their wives (I work with all guys) outside of work (like dinner and skiing) and I have even tried starting a book club. I have met a few women at work who are nice but I have not really clicked with anyone and they are all busy with their own lives. Who has time to include a new person in their life bubble?

On days like today, my fingers itch to dial up friends in the US. Boy, does that really sink in on days like today. Today, I would love to have someone call me or send me an email. I can do the calling, but I guess I'm just having a self-centered day.

So what am I going to do? When it rains here, I secretly hope for the type of rain that comes down in sweeping torrents. I want to see all the grime and trash swept away and be able to go out the next day and be pleasantly surprised at the clean sidewalks. Today, we only had more drizzle. :-(

There always seems to be some sort of construction going on, particularly in the Vieux Port (Old Port) area where I work. I started working in the area last October and it seems like every other week, even in the winter, for some reason the city felt the need to dig up a hole in some part of a number of the streets along the route I walk. And these are not little tiny holes, they are big gaping, 2 SUV-wide, 2 SUV-long, 1.5 SUV-deep size holes. I'm not a construction connoisseur so I sure like would to know what requires digging big holes on the same road more than 3 times in different spots within the short span of a few months.

April In Montreal

Spring here in Montreal is rather similar to spring in Boston: a mix of cool days, abnormally warm days, plenty of rain, and a dash of snow thrown in. Today it's drizzling and cool. For me, this is an ideal day to be out and about. Yes, it's a little dreary but everyone is hiding out at home so there is no crowd - parfait!

After a few rounds of apartment viewing this afternoon, settling in with a nice beignet portugais and tea is a good way to warm up before heading back out for another viewing and for the first session (maybe!?) of the book club I'm starting.

Apartment Hunting

Back to the future!

I'm apartment hunting for the second time around. This time I'm looking for a place to live in by myself. Housing here is done by rooms, so I'm looking for what is called here a 2 1/2 or a 3 1/2. In the US this would be a small 1br/large studio or a normal 1 br.

Montreal is a big city with many arrondisements and finding a nice clean area is tough. Those areas are not plentiful in the city, at least from what I've seen and the areas I've found are not cheap! But who minds paying a little for a little greenery?

I spent 4 1/2 hours today trekking about various parts of town basically walking up and down streets looking for A Louer (for rent) signs. Unlike Boston, I find that not too many ads are placed online for apartments considering the amount available. This is not good for an internet junkie like myself. I'd prefer to do all my apartment hunting from the comfort of my current home in front of a screen, but alas, this city is not as internet driven as Boston so I have no choice but to hit the streets.

You would think that Shanti, the person I moved here for, would be very helpful. Not as much as I'd hoped. It's strange. I guess he does not know the city so well but he preferred to stay home and play games all day rather than walk around with me.

Anyway, I was able to find some places on my own and get a good grasp of some places where I'd like to live.

I'm determined to find a great apartment!

This Blog - The purpose

I decided to start this blog to chronicle my experiences in moving to Canada.
